SIM card for older iPhone 6

I have a not in service iPhone 6 and wonder if I could purchase and install a

prepaid SIM card to allow me to use phone and city mapper feature in London. Not sure whether the phone is locked or unlocked. AT&T was our provider when we originally got the phone and used it. I have a more up to date (2020) phone now, same provider, but don't want to mess with a SIM card with it. Thanks for your help.....Mike

Where did you originally purchase the phone? If you bought it from Apple, it could be locked or unlocked depending on which option you chose. If you purchased it from AT&T, it will definitely be locked to them.

You will need to contact AT&T for help with unlocking your phone.

Your more up-to-date phone may be the better option. An iPhone 6 runs an older operating system (12.5.6) and many developers have stopped making software for it. You could use an eSim (electronic SIM) and keep your current SIM in the newer phone.

If your carrier is still AT&T you should look into AT&T’s international roaming plans. They have a plan that will extend your home voice, data and text plan to many countries (UK included). The cost is $10 a day for any day when you use cellular service, with a $100 limit per billing period. If you have Wi-Fi calling then Wi-Fi calls do not count as cellular usage. This can actually be less expensive than prepaid SIM cards.

For your iPhone 6 you will have to ask AT&T if it is SIM locked, and request that it be unlocked if it is.
