If you select Settings > General > Software Update, it will show your current version. If your iPad is eligible for an update, you will be promoted to do so. If not, then you are at the highest version your iPad will support.

My iPad Air Gen 1 shows 12.2.5 as current and up to date. However Apple support says version 12.5.6 is the up to date version. Any way to force an update? I read that the 12.5.5 --> 12.5.6 update is about security fixes and I definitely would like to complete the update.
Well I had a low battery, so charged for awhile and cycled the power. 12.5.6 update acknowledged and requested. After a few minutes update download started. Took probably 5-10 minutes to complete download. After a pause shifted to being "prepared". This lasted a really long time ~ 15 minutes. Verification required ~1-2 minutes and then the install started. Required 5-10 minutes to complete the installation. Good to go.
