I want to keep my 2015 macbook but just update the system and software is it possible?

Or is the hardware now just too old?

A 2015 MacBook can be upgraded as far as macOS 11 Big Sur, the OS prior to the current macOS, Monterey. Even with that system your Mac will be well equipped for a few years to come.

If by "MacBook" you meant a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air however, your Mac will support macOS 12 Monterey. Neither will support Ventura when it is released soon.
