Does the tag have to be on the outside of Luggage

Does the Apple AirTag have to be on the outside of luggage to work or can it be on the inside?

How do you see where your AirTag has been? How do you see where your apple tag been?or it don’t work the same as if somebody else put their tag on your car? Cause that makes zero sense if so and should be updated! I use it for my dog [Re-Titled by Moderator]

It will work quite well on the inside.

The extra protection afforded certainly outweighs any decrease in range.
