I cannot open/preview files in my OneDrive folder unless they've been downloaded. Every time I attempt to open a file, I keep getting a "Couldn't communicate with a helper application."

Sounds like you are not logged in to OneDrive.
When clicking on the menu extra, do you see the expected status? "Your Files are Synced". Do you see an X on the menu extra suggesting that the sync is paused? What happens when you reboot? Does OneDrive log in automatically?

I confirmed the files are synced, but somehow the error persists.
