Check CPU temperature MacBook Pro Monterey

I'd like to be able to check the internal temperature of my MacBook Pro as I am doing a lot of work from home with as little A/C as I can stand (don't want to make future heat waves any worse). I assume any widget I install is querying the Mac somehow, and I can likely see the same data with the right terminal command.

How can I do this?

The powermetrics command can be used to determine CPU temperature as well as a lot of other parameters. man powermetrics for details.

SMC Sensors is the last category displayed.

If you install Macs Fan Control, you can control/view the fan's RPM while also viewing thermals of the macbook's components. You can go into Preferences > Menu Bar Display to add live temperature readings to the menu bar.

Thanks! The answer was tucked in there.

Turns out I have to be a root user to do this.

Seems like an odd thing to lock away for root access only. I guess that's why widgets doing this are popular--who in the perfect tech bubble of the campus at Apple imagines end users caring about this?
