Share to Blu-ray Issues

After upgrading FCP beyond version 10.5.4, Blu-ray discs shared using FCP do not work on any of my Sony players. The disc icon appears with BD-R BDMV and nothing happens when I select it to play. I have used Verbatim BD-R and other brand BD-R discs with no success. My software and firmware are updated on my players.

The Blu-ray discs I make with FCP version 10.5.4 work perfectly, they open to the menu and then I select the video to play. I would love to be able to upgrade my os and fcpx and be able to burn Blu-ray Discs for my business. I should not have to keep using fop 10.5.4.

I am still having these issues using any FCP version after 10.5.4; however, I just burned a Blu-ray Disc from the FCP 10.6.4 menu but changed the setting to "Play Movie" rather than "Show Menu" on the "When disc loads:" menu item and had success. When I insert the Blu-ray disc into my Sony Blu-ray players, the movie automatically plays. Also, when I stop or pause the movie and go to the menu, it brings me back to the Sony Blu-ray menu rather than the disc menu. The Sony menu shows the same BD-R BDMV as in my original pic when this post was created, but when I press play the movie resumes playing as it should. For trouble shooting purposes, I burned another Blu-ray disc changing the menu setting back to "Show Menu" and it would not play in either of my players just as originally posted.

btw...Sharing to Blu-ray/AVCHD with setting "Show Menu" works flawlessly with FCPX 10.5.4 on both Mac mini M1, Big Sur 11.6.8 and on MacBook Pro 14" Monterey 12.5. The movie "Background" pic loads with the movie title and play button when I insert the disc into my Sony players. Using the "menu" button on the Sony remote brings me back to the movie background pic and movie title that originally loads when the disc is inserted as it should.

hi, Alchroma

the issue is "BD-R BDMV" format the OP posted from his $ony player screenshot menu

it is not compatible with updated $ony BD players, including at least PS gen THREE

the above is covered on a lot of tech websites

the problem is current FCPx (and most likely Compressor) Share> Blu-Ray writes the BD in BD-R BDMV

Mojave 10.14.6 and FCPx 10.4.10

appears to write in an older BD format that doesn't have the problem

the crash/hang issues I noted above seem to be more prevalent when I change the names in the Share BD dialogues

I have three $ony PS boxes and two $ony BD players, and a few other brands of BD players to test my theory -- BDRBDMV play fine on the other brand players

>> Can you provide a detailed step by step as to your procedure?

I did that originally to move the OP forward, but it got moderated...

HERE IS THE "switch" I FOUND TO WORK AROUND MY SHARE>BLU-RAY FAILURES

iMac 2017 i7

64gb RAM

8gb video RAM

1TB internal Apple FLASH SSD

Mojave 10.14.6

FCPx 10.4.10

My project Library had 13 Story Lines totaling about 4hrs

I Exported each Storyline to Apple ProRes 422 and created a new Library stringing them all into one long 4hr StoryLine

I added about 60 Chapter Markers to that

I FIGURED THAT WAS THE SIMPLEST CLEANEST WORKFLOW I COULD CREATE yet I experienced intermittent variety of Disc Create failures and Share failures

HERE IS The FIX SOLUTION that helped me complete my .img and write my DL BD disks

The ChapterMarkers (CM) were causing the problem in two ways:

  1. It seemed if I Modified my ChapterMarkers to contain any numbers or special characters caused the create disk blueray to fail -- even using "..." in my last CM caused a Disk Create failure -- at least when I deleted the ellipsis the process completed and created a usable .img
  2. It also seemed dragging the CM point thingy below (to set a thumbnail) also caused the failures -- at least I had better luck when I did not drag the point to specify a thumbnail for scenes/chapters

If you are having these types of blue ray sharing failures crashing unexpected quits ect -- I would look at these alleged bugs and use only letters in Chapter names and do not slide the point thingy to select specific thumbnails

BTW: THE SAME ISSUES REPEATED IN COMPRESSOR 4.4.8 on Mojave

However running FCPx in BIG SUR (with the latest FCPx) rolled right through Create Disc and the Write process EXCEPT the BD would not play on Sony players (original posted problem) and the menus were all screwed up on my LG 4K BD player

LASTLY:

my Chapter Marks (on my finished 4hr BD) went way out of sync from where I set them in FCPx -- I had to guess and set them up to 10 seconds early at the end (and every time in-between) it was a real guessing game where they would actually start playing

worst software I ever seen on a Mac (pro user since the Centris 650)

I think it is all Sony BD players that have updates ran that don't play the discs from the later OSes

but here's a twist:

the BD FCPx> Share BD> to File I did from Mojave also identified as "BD-R BDMV" in the Sony menu -- and plays the BD discs

point being: something in those macOS/FCPx write processes has changed from the Big Sur version to the Mojave version

+++++++

my step-by-step was more detail than steps

no outside links

I was watching my pros closely and surprised to see it rejected

the short answer is I am seeing the same issue under Big Sur

The brand name you pictured have been rendered incompatible (through updates) with the BD-R BDMV  BDRBDMV format

I am having some luck -- hit and miss -- in Mojave 10.14.6 and FCPx 10.4.10

except for CREATE DISK crashes (at the end of the process)

error 14 "incompatible format" noted in log

also, hangs at 65% 66% where all activity stops (well known bug)

These issues may be machine specific??

I just ran off a TEST BD using FCPro 10.6.4

OS Monterey 12.5.1

Pioneer burner: BDR-XD50TB.

No name BD discs purchased from a local store in a 50 bundle.

@66% the Create Disc came on automatically and did what it is advertised to do.

Burned without issue. Some progress windows can appear behind the FCPro window if left maximised.

Also use Command-9 to open the Background tasks window to see the progress.

I tested the BD disc on a Mac with a Bluray Player and also a TV style BD player.

Mine works OK.

Can you provide a detailed step by step as to your procedure?

Include media type and FCPro Timeline settings please.

More info is better than less.

thanks for the update

my complicated 4-hr bluray project is done -- I just cannot get past Create Disk error trying to write my .img -- CD just (usually) leaves the folder on the desktop with Shared success and a Unexpected Quit CD pop up (well past the known 57% progress bar bug) -- most probably know CreateDisk app is some sort of app plugin installed with FCPx

I've saved my 13 projects as Apple ProRes 422 -- and then put them into a new Library added 59 Chapter Markers -- even saved that all into one 240GB Prorez 422 .mov -- put it back into a new FCPx Library/Project -- and Disc Creator still Crashes

SO FRUSTRAITING -- it takes me three hours a pop trying to write the .img -- not including all the troubleshooting fire drills...

I HAVE A FEELING IT IS THE FANCY CHAPTER MARKERS CAUSING THE PROBLEM NOW because I just started using that feature -- since I was able to successfully burn the .img on earlier versions of my project (hit and miss) -- I started hitting this last brick wall sliding the Chapter Markers to use a selected frame -- my project Shares to Apple Devices 1920x1080 perfect with the workflow described -- it just won't finish Create Disk

My next attempt will be starting a fresh project using my 13 saved Apple ProRez 422 .mov files -- and try to write a BD .img without Chapters -- if that writes the .img, as I expect, it will most definitely be the chapter markers...

after that I will try moving my project over to a Mac mini to rule out a corrupted Create Disk app

importing my prores422 into Compressor and adding my chapters there...
