external cd/DVD burner won't work when plugged in

I purchased a laptop and an external cd/DVD burner. I've never gotten it to work on my MacBook or iMac. I plug it in and nothing pops up. I makes a sound. When I inserted a CD it makes noise a little while then spits it out. Can anyone tell me how to make it work? I would like to burn a CD. Thank you
