The Age of this computer will Govern what newer version of macOS it will Qualify to install. Use About this Mac from the Apple Icon on Desktop - the required Information will be there.

With the above information in-hand - follow this How to get old versions of macOS and verify what version this computer Qualifies to install.  For Best results use Safari to commence the download as Others may not work.

Safari will open a redirect and open the Apple Store where the download can commence.

Computer Qualify for the Monterey upgrade

macOS Big Sur 11 hardware requirements

macOS Catalina 10.15 hardware requirements

macOS Mojave 10.14 hardware requirements

macOS High Sierra 10.13 hardware requirements

macOS Sierra 10.12 hardware requirements

Tips Big Sir Upgrade Released Nov 2020

Tips Monterey Upgrade  Released Oct 25, 2021

Make Time Machine Backup  is very useful and can be used to Revert to Previous Working macOS

Notation - Mojave is the Last version to support 32 bit applications / extensions and Drivers. Catalina, Big Sur & Monterey supports only 64 bit and there is no workaround.

Suggest using Go64 to find 32 bit application before attempting the upGrade. Some or many of the Application already installed may require an update or upGrades to 64 Bit Version

I am trying to download apps from the App Store however it does not allow me to.
(null) can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because macOS version 10.15 or later is required.

You never say what exact Mac is this ....hardware determines what macOS you can upgrade to.

or

what macOS you are currently running.

If you want to upgrade your macOS to be 10.15 or later— your machine hardware has to qualify.

macOS 10.15 is Catalina..

Catalina   macOS 10.15.7

so does this mean I won't be able to download Mac OS 10.15

?

There is no reason to run an outdated macOS—on a 2017 MBAir

you do not say what app you are trying to download(?)— it sounds like 10.15 would be the bare minimum... you can do better staying current...

go back and read the details.

Why would you want to do that? Generally speaking Macintosh HD is the name of the volume that holds the operating system. Removing it would render your Mac unusable, as it would have no operating system to boot from.

Why do you want to remove it?

What are you trying to do exactly?

Getting rid of it is not going to fix that. That's like trying to blow up your car, because you can't open the door.

You need to install a newer operating system on it if possible on your model of Mac to download apps that require a newer operating system.

What mode of Mac do you have exactly? You can find that out in the Apple Menu->About this Mac screen.

Then you try to get a newer operating system as explain above by P. Phillips.
