lost iMessage conversation

The iMessage thread from me to me (I send reminder messages and whatnot to myself here is missing). All data prior to 8/28/2022 is missing. Every other message thread is intact. I did not do anything in particular to cause this, the messages simply aren't there anymore. I was traveling in Europe at the time and wonder if how my phone was configured caused this problem but, as I stated, the only conversation thread missing is that one. Anyone have any tips? The phone automatically backups up so the most recent back up is yesterday night 9/5/22. I would really like to recover this data. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

The iMessages may or may not be backed up...

Look in Settings, [your name], iCloud.

If “Messages” was turned ON in Settings, [your name], iCloud then no you cannot retrieve them. They were not backed up

If “Messages” was turned OFF in Settings, [your name], iCloud then you can restore the entire most recent backup

You would need to wipe the phone with Erase all content and settings, and set it up again to restore the backup so you need to be sure that the messages are on the backup to avoid wasting time. ie were they there yesterday morning? If you lost them last month then they will not be there. Each new backup wipes the previous.

Messages were turned off until just a little am hour ago when I turned it on. Generally, should it stay off?

The phone was backed up last night (it’s on auto back up) and I noticed this one message thread (me to me) was essentially missing all data prior to 8/28 on 9/1 or 2. It’s bizarre because I did not delete or erase it and all other message threads are still there. So annoying because I needed the data in this thread
