iPhone 12 Pro Camera App locks up above 9000 feet elevation

I was on a backpack trip recently and the native camera app stopped working above about 9,000 feet. It would resume working below this elevation. The camera hardware worked fine because third party apps could use it without any problem. I tried all of the usual troubleshooting, including a reset of the phone, but it didn't help.

Hi kdeemer,

You can view details for techincal specifications for your iPhone below and here: iPhone 12 Pro - Technical Specifications

  • Non-operating temperature: −4° to 113° F (−20° to 45° C)
  • Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing

If you plan on being in that environment again and the issue continues, test the steps below found in this article: If the camera or flash on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch isn't working - Apple Support

"Remove case, accessory, or film and test

  1. Remove any case, accessory, or film that might block the camera or flash or that places a magnet near the camera.
  2. Test the camera by trying to take a photo.
  3. Test the LED flash:
    1. Try the flashlight in Control Center on your iPhone or Control Center on your iPad. On an iPhone X or later or an iPad, swipe down from the upper-right corner of the screen. On an iPhone 8 or earlier, swipe up from the bottom edge of any screen.
    2. Tap the Flashlight button Flashlight icon."
