Apple TV box not working after power surge

We had lightning strike a power pole at end of our road. All appliances were fine after apart from both Apple TV boxes stopped working. Ive tried a new HDMI cable but that didn't work either. Any other suggestions. It seems weird that its only 2 Apple TV boxes that were affected.

Welcome Nb_99,

We understand that you have two Apple TVs that won't power on after a recent power surge. We'll do our best to assist with this.

You came from the best resource for the issue: If your Apple TV doesn't turn on - Apple Support

In addition, we'd recommend the following related steps:

  1. Test another power outlet.
  2. Test another power cable.
  3. Complete all steps again: If your Apple TV doesn't turn on - Apple Support

If you still can't get them powered on, then it would be best to bring them in for an inspection: Apple TV Service & Repair - Apple Support

To be prepared, visit a local Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store: Locate - Apple

Bring the Apple TV(s), original receipts, and a photo ID to your appointment.

Wishing you well, cheers.

If the light isn’t coming on at all then you may be right, but if it was at least flashing then it can indicate it’s just in recovery mode and there is a possibility to restore. There may be other appliances that weren’t affected but this is more like a computing device and considering its age it may have already been inching closer to failure. Remember 12 years for a computing device of this nature is quite a lot, for comparison this was released around the time of iPhone 4 and uses the same chip. Not to mention, that even for those that still function it is more limited in what it can do (based on software and providers continuing to drop support). So was just suggesting to move onto something more current.

If you have the 2nd gen then note the product is around 12 years old and no longer supported for updates or issues. Also, many providers have been removing access for the server-based channels that run on that model. However, if you still want to try the only thing would be to find a micro usb cable (make sure it is capable of data transfer and not designed for a specific device) to connect to computer and do a restore. If that doesn't work then best bet is to find a cheap second hand 4th gen (which runs the modern TVOS, native apps, and still supported).

Unfortunately I took my Apple TV’s to the store and they wouldn’t even look at they said it’s a vintage product and basically wouldn’t waste their time looking at it to even try and fix it! Very dissatisfied especially because I buy so many apple products to just be brushed off like that but I get it, it’s business! I should just buy a new one!
