Accidentally downloaded malware that might be stealing information

this is just a suspicion.

I got a new M2 macbook air, and i was downloading some pdfs and applications from unverified sources. A few days later, my instagram and google account was hacked into although i have 2FA. i understand that 2FA is not infallible and hackers can brute force in, however it happened quite frequently.

I am assuming that the hackers managed to get remote access into my accounts and duplicate everything and intercept information coming in.

My instagram got hacked twice within a few weeks and my gmail just got alerted for suspicious activity.

My cpu usage does not show anything suspicious, there are no weird processes running.

what are some actions i could take from here. i have already changed my passwords and reset 2FA security. will the genius bar be able to do a diagnostics test?

MacBook Air, macOS 12.5

You need to talk to Apple Support / Apple Store about arranging a diagnostic test.

If you wish to scan your system, Malwarebytes is endorsed by many users in this group and all you need to do is download the free version and run it.

If you have Time Machine and you know the date when you think you were infected you could restore back to before then, however your compromised accounts remain in their latest state regarding password changes etc.

Q - " I am assuming that the hackers managed to get remote access into my accounts and duplicate everything and intercept information coming in. "

A - Hackers would need Directly Physical Access to this computer and have the Computer Password to plant the " Bad Actor " Software on this computer

A - Additionally, and specific to Big Sur macOS 11 and Monterey macOS 12, the Operating System resides in a Sealed and Read Only Volume that can not be opened by the User and protects against from “ Bad Actor “ Software.

A - There is Adware & Malware which will affect the computer and is generally downloaded from “ Shady “ Websites or Developers who Inject this software into the download.

Should “ Certain & Specific Software “ referenced from above be installed - it will negatively impact macOS. It is suggested, download directly from the Developer , the application Malwarebytes for Mac

It is free or paid for added features.

Run the Application and it should remove the malware / adware.

Once done, restart computer and test.
