Subscribing to and then cancelling a VPN

I want to get a vpn through my Apple account to ensure no problems if and when I decide to cancel. So, do I get the app through the app store and then if/when I cancel I go to my Appstore/account/subscriptions and then cancel - then Apple tells the VPN that I've cancelled and the VPN stops the service. Is that how it works?
