Why does apple force you to give a credit card to sign in?

I want to sign in and use Apple Podcast For Creators. I created an account. I verified thru email. I verified thru phone. It won't let me sign in because I don't have a credit card on file. I tried to put one, but it hangs up on some page about itunes. Is there a way to use apple without giving them access to my credit card?

You can also use your Apple ID balance as payment method: Add money to your Apple ID balance

Then see -> Related Article -> Change, add, or remove Apple ID payment methods

  • set your Apple ID balance as your default payment method.
