Lost contacts

Lost many contacts after an automatic iCloud backup. I was texting with these contacts last night and now their contact is gone. Many contacts have been in my phone for over 2 years and bow they’re gone. But yesterday evening they were there. The automatic iCloud backup occurred at 12:42AM. I can only assume that this is when the contacts went missing. My phone was on a charger last night from around 11:00PM to about 12:45. Could the phone being disconnected while the update was in progress cause this?

You need to check if those contacts were sync on iCloud. Settings > your name > iCloud > Contacts.
See if you can locate the contacts on the website iCloud.com > Contacts.
If you can see the contacts on the website but not your phone, its a sync problem. If you can't see the contacts on the website, they can be on a different account.

Check Settings > Contacts > Accounts.

Also, see if the accounts are selected in Contacts app > Groups

Also check iCloud.com/Account Settings using a browser. At the bottom under Advanced, there should be a Restore Contacts option.
