Mac boots straight to internet recovery. No option to boot from usb

My recovery partition was deleted. Unable to use internet recocery. Fails out. I successfully created a USB boot drive but now cannot get the mac to boot from the usb. All button combos lead to either internet recovery or the startup error. Can't boot from usb. What am I missing?

What is the exact model of your Mac? You can get this information by entering the system serial number here:

Check Your Service and Support Coverage - Apple Support

If you have a 2018+ model, then you won't be able to boot from USB unless you first enable booting from USB by modifying the system security settings through Recovery Mode and the Startup Security Utility.

Internet Recovery Mode (Command + Option + R is best) usually fails due to some sort of network issue. It is usually best to connect the Mac directly to the router using an Ethernet cable and an adapter if necessary for a faster more reliable network connection which also bypasses any hard to troubleshoot WiFi issues. You can try power cycling the modem & router making sure to wait at least five minutes for them to finish booting.
