OS Upgrade for iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010)

I have an iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) and need to know if I can upgrade the OS, which is OS X El Capitan. I am blocked by so many web sites due to the version of Chrome and Safari browsers I have. But I can't upgrade the browsers until I upgrade the OS. I cannot find any answers on how to do this.
