Apple Thunderbolt Monitor & MacBook Pro M1

Hi,

I picked up some threads with the same problem, I have never seen an official answer.

I use an apple Thunderbolt Monitor 27 with Macbook pro M1. It worked for a while with an adapter and then it stopped working (tried everything rebooting, change refresh rate). When I plug the monitor to an old Intel Macbook pro 13, it works just fine.

At the meantime I used a HDMI and it works just fine. One day the macbook screen started acting bizarre, it turns on and off. After rebooting it started working again until one day it went black. I took it to an apple store and they changed the display (thanks god had applecare).

Here is the interesting part, after fixing the display issue, the thunderbolt monitor started working again for about a month and this morning it stopped again.

I am wondering if a logic board goes bad or something and that causes this issue.

Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi amounir,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Great troubleshooting so far. Have you had a chance to test using HDMI with this MacBook Pro or the display connection with your other MacBook Pro as you mentioned doing initially? If so, do you get the same results?

It may help to test another cable, adapter or port. Try all troubleshooting from If your external display isn't detected or appears blurry when connected to your Mac - Apple Support which can resolve most external display issues.

As far as hardware issues, if you'd like you can run a diagnostics test using the steps below from Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support.

"Apple silicon

  1. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release when you see the startup options window, which includes a gear icon labeled Options.
  3. Press Command (⌘)-D on your keyboard."

If any codes are found, reference Apple Diagnostics reference codes - Apple Support to learn more about what they mean.

Take care.
