FCPX 10.6.4 Transitions
I've tried ALL the suggestions.
Red handles. Yellow handles. Compound clips etc. Even tried reloading 10.6.2.
The same error message appears and still NO TRANSITIONS work???
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG, APPLE?

As always, Tom's suggestion is a very good one - it can show you visually what the problem may be.
The selected edge of the clip shows in yellow, provided that you are not at the very end (or start) of the clip - even if you have one frame more.
Now to make a transition of, say, 2 seconds, you need 1 second of handle for each of the clips - in general, you need half the duration of the transition.
The default is often 1 second. In a 30fps project, that means you need 15 extra frames at the end of the outgoing clip, and an extra 15 frames before the start of the incoming clip.
Here is an edit point, both sides in yellow:
Double-click the edit point to see how much handles there are:
In this example Clip A has only 4 frames of handles.
Not enough for a 1 second transition - that would be 12 frames in a 24fps project, or 15 frames in 30fps project.
Press escape, with the timeline active, to close the Precision Editor.
Note: if you do really have more than enough handles on both sides, then start by deleting preferences; but I am willing to bet that lack of enough handles is the issue here.
Relaunch the application to trash your preferences. ⌥ ⌘ s as you launch the app. There may be a preferences setting that’s corrupted. The precision editor, from what I could see, seem to have enough media.
The alert means you the clip/s do not have Media Handles.
Make sure the clip/s in/out points are not at the extreme start or end of the clip/s.

Just bringing this up in case it causes confusion with chrismeibusch - There's a typo in the preference reset command.
To reset the preferences just hold ⌥⌘ (Option and Command) as you launch FCP. There's no 's' needed.
Looks like a reset of the Prefs sorted it. 👍

Select the edit point where you want to place the edit. A red or yellow mark will appear. Double click the edit point to open the Precision Editor. Post a screenshot of the timeline area.
It’s kind of zoomed in, but it looks like it should work. Now let’s see what the project area looks like. Select the edit point and press ⌘ T.

NOT FOR ME!
My clips all have yellow handles.
Screen shots please to show what you mean …
Thanks Tom. I think this is what you wanted ???
Not inside the percussion editor. Close it with the ESC key. Show the project timeline, including the header, and the selected edit.
Thanks Terry.
