Macbook M1 appearance change

My recently purchased MacBook M1 has all of a sudden change all appearances. The background is dark. The colors are all different. Photos look like negatives. This is happening through Safari, Chrome, Messages, Mail, etc. I have tried everything I can to get it back to the default. I think it has something to do with the dark/light feature, but I have tried changing and nothing happens. I want to go back to the white background, black text, bold Favorites bar, etc. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.
