Mobile data usage with turned off roaming

Hello Apple Community,

I am from Germany but have been in the USA for a little over 2 weeks. I have turned off roaming on my iPhone 11 since I flew here and have also completely disabled my mobile data.

However, my mobile data costs now already show €2.12 for this month. I also incurred mobile data charges last month, even though I actually had them turned off on my iPhone.

Since I'm staying in the U.S. for a while, I want to avoid further costs for mobile data, which I don't even use here!

I use internet exclusively with wifi.

Where do the costs for mobile data usage come from when I have completely turned off the use of mobile data and roaming in the settings on my iPhone for more than 2 weeks?

How can I avoid further costs?

I would like to add that I have been to the US several times before, but this is the first time the problem has occurred. Otherwise, with mobile data & roaming turned off, I never had a problem or extra charges.

Many thanks in advance!

I was able to stop the data consumption by turning off the "Wi-Fi Assist“ (automatically uses mobile data when Wi-Fi connectivity is poor) function. Despite previously turning off mobile data and the roaming option, mobile data was apparently used imperceptibly for Wifi support, since that button still was active.

I actually find it unfortunate and a bit confusing that you still have to deactivate the extra slider for Wifi support, although you would think that the slider at the very top would allow you to disable any mobile data usage.
