Multitasking is a useless shortcut bar!

Maybe it's just me but when an application goes into "multitasking" mode (or at least most of those i use) it basically cease working an when i resume it it needs to start up again just as I had just selected it from the start.
For instance i use "Ndrive" as satnav and when resumed from background it needs to charge the map i was using and fix the point as i had closed it. Very useful indeed!
So besides those using skype (that is supposed to stay connected whils on background) what is the point of the multitaskin beides being a shortcut bar at the bottom of the phone?
Multitasking Was my HTC with 10+ apps running in the background and promptly resumed from where I had left them!

My 2 cent!
(otherwise happy with my new iP4)

Well battery lasted 1hr if i had kept all of them on all the time, not if done just the time i need them to be on he background.
I appreciate the apps are slowly updating he way the run, but meanwhile calling it multitasking is misleading.
It would be more appropriate calling it "multi-displaying" because that's what basically is so far...
Let's wait then...
Cheers
