Java is a programming language and runtime system that allows development of apps that run on all platforms.
So, if there was an app you wanted that was written in Java, you would need the Java runtime installed.
Tried and failed to update JAVA. I was instructed to remove old versions of Java then got the message "failed to uninstall Java: XPC connection error.'.
I think I should remove Java as they say I have not used it for some time, but the Java help pages suggest uninstall using terminal which seems to me risky for the non computer savvi,. I am also concerned that it may leave old versions around. I am now confused .
Not sure why you would need to go to the Terminal to remove Java.
Open /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines in Finder and delete any folders inside.
If there is a Java preference pane in System Preferences, ctrl-click on it and choose Remove.
macOS, and all the Apple apps installed with macOS do Not need Java.
If you have a 3rd party app that was written in Java (CrashPlan for example was written in Java), then you would need to have Java. However, most 3rd party apps that depend on Java tend to make sure they have a copy install when the app is installed.
If you remove Java and an app you are using stops working, then re-install the app and it, IN THEORY, should install a compatible version of Java.
Best make a system back up first, just in case "IN THEORY" is wrong.
thank you. I think I have got rid of Java and a large number to java script files , so I will wait and see what happens now. The replies have all been helpful and I am grateful that so many people are willing to help someone like me who does not really understan d the modern world!
If you have installed Java (which is the only way it gets on your Mac), then you should update it.
If you don't know how you installed Java on your Mac, you should look into that.
I have been running macos sin this desktop computer since 2015 and have no idea when or why i installed java. What does Java do? perhaps I should delete it?
