the folders on my mac desktop have disappeared

Let's try to locate the missing folders by completing the steps listed here. They cover a few different ways you can search your Mac to see if you locate the missing folders and files: If you can’t find a file on Mac - Apple Support

"On your Mac, do any of the following:

• Use Spotlight: Open Spotlight , enter the file’s name in the search field, then double-click the file in the search results. See Search with Spotlight.
• View in the Finder: Click the Finder icon  in the Dock, click Recents in the Finder sidebar, then choose View > Group By > Date Last Opened. (If you don’t see Group By in the View menu, choose View > Use Groups.)
• 
• View the Recent Items list: Choose Apple menu  > Recent Items, then choose the file from the list (if it appears there)."

iCloud Drive is another possibility. Did you recently make any iCloud changes or turn off anything? If you've used iCloud Drive before, try following this path. If you use iCloud Drive to sync your Desktop and Documents folders but it was turned off at any point, you might need to turn it back on: Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support

"Turn on Desktop and Documents

Turn on Desktop and Documents on every Mac that you want to use with iCloud Drive.

1. From your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences. Click Apple ID, then click iCloud. In macOS Mojave or earlier, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click iCloud.
2. Make sure that iCloud Drive is turned on.
3. Next to iCloud Drive, click Options.
4. Choose Desktop & Documents Folders."
