Granting Full Disk Access in Monterey

I'm trying to help a friend make Carbonite work on a new MacBook with Monterey OS and Apple has made changes in how access is granted to apps that need to see Macintosh HD to perform their function and it is now something a user must do. The articles and instructions we've read are not complete and do not accurately portray what happens on the Mac when he tries to follow them. I will not be upgrading to Monterey until I understand this. Any tips or help will be appreciated.

My friend just got a new computer and upgraded to Monterey. Software that had been running for over 8 years on the former laptop started sending error messages requiring granting full disk access. Never having heard of that since it is new in Monterey (or a stricter version of it) a search was done on 'full disk access for Mac laptop on Monterey.' There are documents by Apple and various Apple oriented websites and they were all very high level discussions about why Apple decided to implement this new bit of security and with a general description of how to do the setup in System Preferences. The item that did help was actually from a reference on the software's website that mentioned that full disk access had to be given to System Preferences as well. He is waiting 24 hours for the next scheduled backup to see if it works as instructed by the error message. I am not dealing with the details of this and I don't have a specific link to give you. If someone has a reason to grant full disk access to more than 1 application, be aware that you must do them one at a time.

We have solved the problem by finding a document that finally included a step that was not included in all the other documents we read, especially those from Apple. Yes, with the missing piece of information it was not complicated. I think often intense Mac users forget that everyone who has a problem does not have their knowledge base. Heyjude.
