can no longer import photos and video from iPhone 12 pro and SD card to mac book pro

I can no longer import photos from my iPhone 12 pro or sd card to photos app. I keep getting the message "Some items cannot be added to your Photo library because they may be an unrecognizable file format or the file may not contain valid data." I am running Monterey 12.5.1. My photo library is on an external hard drive. This started about a week ago.
