Screen cracked for no apparent reason

Even Apple mixes up the glass and LCD in some documentation and communications. I just like to provide information to people as it sometimes helps in understanding the situation a bit better. I was talking to a user within our organization today about the exact same thing. I thought of another possibility of how something like this can occur. It may occur when someone tries cleaning the display.

I definitely can understand your dissatisfaction. Unfortunately Apple thinks everyone wants & needs the thinnest laptop possible so if you choose a Mac you have no choices here. A thinner design means it tends to become a bit more fragile and delicate in some circumstances. While some people want and/or need such thin devices, others would be happy with a slightly thicker more robust design. Unfortunately Apple does what Apple wants and only considers user feedback when the outrage is too much for Apple to ignore (Touchbar anyone? Unfortunately even deciding to remove it was short lived.). You would be even more disappointed if you knew half of the stuff I have personally observed & discovered while supporting the USB-C Macs and a few other things I've found out about from others online who are more knowledgeable about some of the more lower level technical aspects. I no longer recommend Macs to anyone these days.

The LCD Panel is cracked. I can see two cracks in the picture (kind of diagonal emanating from the corner). The glass is not damaged though. Something may have pressed up against the glass (it has some flexibility) or perhaps against the back, or maybe it suffered an impact that transferred the pressure to the LCD Panel. Maybe the display was twisted slightly when opening the lid or cleaning the glass. It is really hard to say. Once in a while maybe there may be a defect or spontaneous failure, but most times when I've seen these types of cracks there some signs to indicate the cause. Keep in mind these laptops have are very thin which does have some consequences making things a bit more fragile.

You will either need to pay for the repair or purchase/use another laptop unless you want to use an external display instead.
