iOS 16 connection to MBP

While updating my iPhone SE (2020) to iOS 16, I received a popup screen that indicated that software was needed to allow me to connect my iPhone to my mid-2012 MBP (running Mojave). I allowed the download, and have had no problems, but I have never seen this screen before. Is this legitimate?

Yes it is legitimate. I got the same pop up some time ago when syncing my iPad with my Mac. See this.
