This is a combined problem possibly. Normally, when I receive a message sound notification on my iPhone , the message shows up on my desktop app. This morning I heard the sound, looiked in my app, NOTHING! I messaged a friend to message me. I arrived on my desktop app but recieved no notification sound from phone. Only one number and these things normally are synced.

text message forwarding was OFF!! I enabled it. I received a text. with a late 'ding' whereas 'choo choo' is enabled!! I had another one sent just now and got my choo choo back !! Strange. Thanks.

Use Messages in iCloud - Apple Support (CA)
And on the iDevice >> Setting >> Messages >> Text Forwarding is enabled.
Still on the iDevice and make sure the Computer By Name is Listed and enabled ( slider to Green )
Double check on the iPhone if Messages in iCloud may have been turned off and do the same on the computer.
Have updated iPhone to iOS 16 yesterday and two Apple M1 Computers today to Monterey 12.6 and all works whether from an Android or iPhone device.

None of the iMessages came from phones with OS 16 installed. One can in from an Android device. I'm upgrading my iPhone 6s to 15.7 right now.
On phone [now running 15.7] under iCloud/Manage storage iMessage has green/ON
On Mac, under 'Apple ID/iCloud there is no iMessage in list.
Just to be clear: Android message caused a 'sound' and did not show up on desktop. All iPhone messages showed up in both places but no sound.
