My spouse and I have different apple IDs on our phones, but if I change my iMessages name or if he does it changes it on the other person's phone, too. How can we unlink these phones (and why are they linked together to begin with if on different apple IDs)?

I ask because sometimes when you share an Apple ID, there can be residual effects after creating your own ID’s. My family shared an Apple ID for too long, but we got away with it. It required some work on my part, but I got it done.
However, Can you explain what your iMessages name means? Also, make sure that your contact information is correct on each other’s devices and nothing is incorrectly linked there.

No, we didn't share Apple IDs. It's baffling to us why they are linked.
