You can erase it by using Disk Utility in Recovery mode:

It tells me to select another backup disk. I just want to clear space on my existing disc and it won't let me. I even tried erasing it with disk utility and it says the disc can't be unmounted since the finder is using it.
Put this Drive aside for Safe Keeping ( like Safety Deposit in Bank ) for Future resting of specific files.
Get another External Drive with 2 1/2 Times Greater Drive Capacity of the Internal Drive and setup a new Time Machine.
