When I try to restart it I get time in green numbers and a red lightning symbol

I tried that then charged it overnight. Thanks. However now I am back to seeing only the apple logo. Over yesterday and today I have tried force shutting down and restarting about 20 times. Nothing changes. Have you any further ideas?

That's power reserve mode;

To turn off power reserve mode,press and hold the side button for about 10 seconds, until you see the watch restart and the Apple logo appear. Keep in mind that if your battery is almost completely empty, you might need to charge the watch before it will restart normally.
