I have repeatedly tried the guidance on a Jan 2022 thread indicating to turn off Personal Hotspot on child iPhone and then setting the Screentime setting on Cellular settings to Don’t Allow. Seems entirely ineffective as this does not actually disable cellular settings at all. Help! What am I missing? Does this work for ANYBODY??
Hotspot is not really a cellular setting. As it does not offer your child any additional benefit (it only benefits others) then I'm not sure you can control it. Are you wanting them to stop offering the benefit to their friends?
Their SIM could be set by the provider to prohibit tethering I guess but then they could not use their hotspot for their own ipad or computer.
I am wanting him to stop helping himself by using his iPhone personal hotspot as internet source for his PC that typically uses our home router until bedtime when it shuts down using the router software on a timed schedule. The personal hotspot gives him internet access beyond bedtime and as such he has been surfing or playing when he should be sleeping. Subsequently he sleeps or doesn’t make it to classes. This is an unacceptable loophole that Apple has left open
That is a judgy unhelpful response. Need ability give him the ability to navigate the city on his own as a teenager to build life skills and also work with the reality that I work long hours and am not able to consistently physically remove his phone by bedtime. How is the Apple screentime feature Cellular Data Changes set Don’t Allow supposed to work? It gives false sense of feature and function.
I tried that — T-mobile. They offered me FamilyMode which is an easily bypassed app that is useless and has no impact on Personal Hotspot. Then they suggested to turn off data which is not helpful as his he needs certain access for school. This is maddening.
How is this an unacceptable loophole?
Take his phone away from him during those hours.
Contact your cellular carrier and have them remove that feature from his line.
It is not judgy at all. You're his parent, lay down some ground rules.
