Transferring data to older iPhone?

I have an iPhone 8 that I'd like to keep handy as an emergency back-up, in case I lose or break my current phone. I thought it would be a good idea to set it up with my existing data (contacts list, at least), but the phone-to-phone transfer does not work, and of course my Mac doesn't have iTunes, which the iPhone expects to see when connected. Trying to do it via iCloud, the old phone fails to verify the Mac's password for some reason, and that prevents transfer as well.

Anybody have any ideas how I might move data from a current Mac/iPhone setup to an older iPhone?

Update the iPhone 8 to iOS 16, and transfer the contents from your “current” iPhone to a “new” iPhone 8, same as usual for migrating to a different (albeit usually newer) iPhone.

To sync the iPhone, use Finder: Use the Finder to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer - Apple Support

Log in using the same Apple ID everywhere.
