How to redeem balance in Apple Account?

I have a balance showing in my Apple Account. It’s been sitting in my account for years and I stumbled upon today. I’ve made many iTunes purchases over the last year and don’t understand why this account hasn’t been depleted. When I access Payment Methods on my iPhone, select my Apple Account which is listed before my credit card, and select Redeem, it wants a code or use my camera to scan a code. I don’t have neither, so how can I use these funds for Apple purchases?

When redeeming a gift card, the amount will be credited to your (1) Apple ID balance and (2) you need to set your Apple ID balance as your default payment.

If you update your payment method or add funds to your Apple ID balance, It would take about 1 to 3 business days in order to process.

Thank you. Even though my Apple Account was the default payment, I removed my credit card as the second payment option. I just did an iTunes purchase and it deducted from my Apple Account. I appreciate the help:
