Why can’t I manually update PowerBeats Pro firmware?

Every article about issues pairing Beats Pro headphones says the firmware should update automatically if they’re paired with your device and running the latest iOS. But my PowerBeats won’t pair because the firmware is out of date. How can I update it? How is it possible I can’t just plug the PowerBeats Pro into my laptop or iPhone and manually update the firmware? I feel like I’m stuck in a loop of not being able to pair the headphones because the firmware is out of date and I can’t update the firmware because they have to be paired! It’s maddening.
