macOS firewall Enable stealth mode responds to ping when lid shut

The macOS firewall on my MacBook Air has Enable stealth mode ticked. When the lid is open and I'm using my MacBook it doesn't respond to ping as intended. However when I shut the lid it starts responding to ping. The MacBook also responds to pings when the screen goes black (off).

I'm running macOS 12.6. Is anyone else seeing this behaviour and is it expected or a bug?

Hi Faith185,

Thank you for your message.

I tried creating a new user account and the initially the behaviour was as desired (no response to ping). I then unchecked the Wake for network access (Power Adapter) under Battery in System Preferences and the MacBook Air started to respond to pings after closing the lid. I tried this a few times and observed the same behaviour. Wake for network access is unchecked under my normal user account.

I was able to replicate the same behaviour on the Mac Mini.

It looks like Wake for network access isn't doing what it should do as it responds to ping when turned off. i.e. the Mac is responding to a ping and therefore woken when a ping is received.

Hey, Paul_74.

We’d like to try to isolate this issue with you.

Do you see the same behavior when you start your Mac in safe mode? Here’s how: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support -- Once your Mac is in safe mode, test the issue. Please be aware that it takes longer to start in safe mode:

Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed.

Whether or not the issue happens while in safe mode, restart your Mac normally to exit.

If it didn’t happen while your Mac was in safe mode, test the issue again. It may have resolved your issue.

Please let us know the results when you're able.

All the best.

Hi Paul_74,

Since the same occurs in safe mode, it might also be a good idea to test in another user account. That will let you know whether this is isolated to your user account or is system-wide. If you don't have another user account on your Mac to test, you can set up a temporary admin user by following the guidance below which is from Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support.

"Add a user

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
  2. If the lock at the bottom left is locked, click it to unlock the preference pane.
  3. Click the Add button + below the list of users.
  4. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user."

If the same happens there, reach out to Apple Support since the issue is system-wide. If this only occurs in your user account, there might be an issue with an account-specific setting like your Login items. You can remove those using these steps from Open items automatically when you log in on Mac.

"Add or remove automatic items

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
  2. Select your user account, then click Login Items at the top of the window.
  3. Do any of the following:
    • Remove a login item: Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click the Remove button - below the list."

Best of luck.

Hey, Faith185.

With the issue happening both while in safe mode and in a new user account, and especially since you’re also having the same issue with a different Mac, we recommend reaching out to Apple Support: Get Support

Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support -- If you live in a country where the above link doesn’t take you to Apple Support, you can give them a call using the phone number provided in this article. If there isn’t one in your area, please contact the nearest one.

Take care.
