How do I keep accidentally opening emoji and symbols?

Every day since updating from macOS 11.6.7 to 11.6.8, once or twice, I've been doing something that doesn't involve typing at all when suddenly the emoji and symbols viewer appears. I don't think I've been pressing any shortcuts, and usually it appears just when I've stopped using a text box, for instance exiting a closed caption in Final Cut Pro to move on to the next one. How do I keep doing this? I thought it didn't work anymore. Last week every time I tried to open it to get a symbol by pressing the menu to open the symbol/keyboard viewer in the menu bar it didn't work. Has this happened to anyone else?

Check the setting for "Press fn key to" in System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard. You could have it set to "Show Emoji & Symbols".
