is it ok to directly update from high sierra to monterey?


iMac 21.5″ 4K, macOS 10.13

Yes, provided your iMac is a Late-2015 or newer model, and there are no 32-bit applications that you are dependent upon that are not supported on the 64-bit only Monterey. I suggest that you install and run the free Go64 application to get a list of 32-bit applications.


You want to verify with the third-party vendors for the 32-bit applications that you have that they have a 64-bit version compatible with Monterey, and do so for your printer/scanner drivers too, unless your printer model appears on this Apple AirPrint supported list, wherein you would not need vendor drivers for Monterey.


Do perform a last Time Machine backup prior to your upgrade to Monterey, and do not reuse that drive for your first Monterey Time Machine backup.
