Excel 365 for Mac "unable to record macro"

Excel was recording macros without a problem, but during a work session, it started generating this message. My procedure is Developer > Record Macro button. I get the normal window with macro name and "Store macro in:"

I assign "This Workbook" as the place to store the macro -- no change from what worked before.

I click OK, and get a message box:

"Alert

Unable to record."

I've closed and reopened Excel. I've gone to a new workbook. The problem persists.

More than 50 others have reported this problem on the Apple website over the past 2 or 3 years. There are no solutions there or on the Microsoft website.

This problem is on a MacBook Pro that is working with no other problems, is less than 1 year old, and has the M1 Max chip with 64 GB memory.

I've long observed that Excel for Mac is more buggy than Excel for Windows. This is just another of a long list of examples.
