why is there a dark spot on the lower left portion of my screen (iphone 7 product red) whenever i turn the brightness down

This could possibly be a hardware issue with the display, but we can try a simple step that would help rule out a software issue.
Follow the steps here to restart your iPhone and see if the spot is removed:
"Press and hold the side button until the power-off slider appears.
Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo."

It also looks like you have a screen protector, you might want to remove it comes to getting your iPhone serviced to rule out an issue with that pressing against the display creating that spot.
