Verification failed, invalid phone number

When trying to sign in an Apple ID I created 5 days ago to an iPad or web browser on PC, I receive an error saying "Verification failed, invalid phone number". This occurs as I hit the sign in button after entering the email and password. It was set up with two-factor authentication originally, and when I go to reset the password it says the same thing.


As an additional note, this is a landline/company phone that I've used for several other Apple ID's for work purposes which have no issues using it to receive two-factor calls.

Being able to sign in to the Apple ID is important. To confirm, do you see a prompt to enter a verification code immediately before this message? If not, are you able to sign in to the Apple ID website with this account? If not, and you're presented with the same error, it's likely that a verification code isn't able to be sent to the number and you will need to request account recovery. This process would allow you the opportunity to sign in to the account and verify the phone number associated to the account, or update the number if needed.


How to use account recovery when you can’t reset your Apple ID password


If you're able to sign in to the Apple ID website, you can follow the steps below to update your trusted phone number. These steps are specific to updating the trusted phone number via the Apple ID website.


"Update your trusted phone number on your Apple ID account page"

  1. "Go to appleid.apple.com.
  2. Sign in with your Apple ID.
  3. Go to the Security section and click Edit."
