Custom Restore

Just wondering if there is any way of modifying my restore file to only restore certain app settings.. Everytime I do a software upgrade, I always set the phone up as new and while it doesn't really bother me that much, I have 3 applications whose settings I would like to carry over without having to type everything in again.. The apps in question are Car Minder, Tap Fish (silly but it keeps me busy at work) and Beejive IM.. I looked at the restore file and all I see is numbers and know way of knowing what application they are for..

iPhone 4, iOS 4

I wonder.

I not sure about this, but while going through 4 phones (my 3G and three iphone 4's), I also did some name changing in itunes (double clicking on the phone name).

I thought that itunes would keep track of the phones by serial number or something, but when I went into restore as new the last time, it also game the the usual choice to restore from a back-up - and it gave be choices including the same phone with a different name.

That got me to thinking that maybe users could set up a phone the way they want, before going through a lot of use and changes, and get the backup they want. Then change the name to get another backup which, over time, changes as they add apps, etc.

Then, if they ever need to restore as new, couldn't they then do a restore from this, hopefully, clean backup? Or, even if they do restore as new, they could follow that with this clean backup.

I haven't worked it all out or decided if it is worth it, but I know I hate when I have to restore as new and lose all my game accomplishments.

Frankly, we need an app that somehow saves a file that keeps all game results and settings (not the games themselves) which you could then use to reset those things automatically.

Thanks to everyone who tried to answer the question (except the guy who always chimes in like an Apple robot while not being helpful at all). Each and every app has its own set of files in the backup so i thought that maybe if there was a way of figuring out which files go with which app, I could just delete all the other stuff I don't care about and restore the files that I need. I found some software online that seems like it would do what I need but the guy wants 25 bucks for it so I passed on it. I know BB had an option where it would let you choose what part of the backup you actually wanted to restore and the rest would be left out. Having a custom restore file on file all the time would be great instead of restoring everything (which more than often, results in bad performance) or redoing everything from scratch.
