What is "other" category for storage?

The majority of my storage is being occupied by "other". It contains 171.2 GB of my 255 GB total.. What exactly is in this “other” storage category  and how can I clean it up to optimize my storage?

Other is owned by the operating system and there is little you can do about what the System controls.

Notation - If the user is using a cloning software like Carbon Copy Cloner - suggest tweaking the Safety Net Feature in this software. It may be making addition Snap Shots that are not being Cloned to the Eternal Drive. If this should be the case, these Snap Shot could be using additional space on the drive
