HomePod Not Playing Music

My HomePod is telling to "update my apple music subscription" when I request to play music. I have never subscribed to Apple's music. Only purchased songs from iTunes for my ipod and ipad. Any suggestions as to how to fix this issue?

Siri on HomePod can play from your unhidden purchase history with the iTunes Store, or your iCloud Music Library if you have a subscription to Apple Music or iTunes Match. You can AirPlay from your computer or iOS devices if you don't want to subscribe at this time.
