What causes a different font to appear when using Pages?

A years-old problem that I've never been able to solve confidently and quickly. It happens in docs with text boxes and within tables. The frustrating situation is when I click in a new cell or text box and a new font at a different size pops up. Easy to change it one by one but I've never understood where that universal control is! What setting do I need to tinker with to set or reset the default font in a doc?

With Pages v12.1, the default font that is present in text boxes or table cells will be either the default font that you set in Pages Preferences General in the prior Pages session, or if that is not selected, then it will be Times New Roman Regular.

If you open a Word document whose text box or table cell contain an installed font — that specific font is retained once translated into Pages document format. If it is not an installed font, then very likely, Pages will attempt Times New Roman Regular for font substitution.

Hello Ben Waddington,

If you want to change the default font in Pages on Mac, please check out this link, which outlines how to do that: Set a default font in Pages on Mac

Set a default font and font size for Basic templates

The font and font size you choose apply to the Body paragraph style. Other paragraph styles use the same font, and their sizes adjust according to the font size relationships of the original template. For example, if you choose Lucida Grande and 12 points, the Title paragraph style in the Blank template uses Lucida Grande and its size is 33 points instead of 30 points.

1. Choose Pages > Preferences (from the Pages menu at the top of your screen).
2. Click General, then select the checkbox next to “Set font and size for new Basic documents.”
3. Click the Font pop-up menu and choose a font.
4. Click the arrows next to Font Size to choose a font size, or type a value in the text field.
5. Click OK.

Your setting applies to new documents you create after you set the preference; it doesn’t change the font for existing documents. If you later want to revert the templates to their original fonts, deselect the “Set font and size for new documents” checkbox.

Thanks!

HI Steven,

If you want to see that use the Provide Pages Feedback menu item in the Pages menu to make a Feature request.

Apple participation in these user to user communities is minimal, and does not include participation by Apple Leadership or members of he product development teams.

Messages sent via the Feedback channel go directly to Apple, and are read. Those deemed of interest to or needing the consideration of the development teams are forwarded to the appropriate teams.

Here, you're talking to fellow users. We can usually help with 'how to' issues and 'how to I make this work' questions and other similar topics, but not with development issues or the like.

Regards,

Barry

Hello Barry,

Sorry, you misunderstand what I'm saying.

Having to click a checkbox to confirm that you want to change the default font, before a picker (drop down box in this case) appears is what seems to be non-standard. It also doesn't draw the eye to the option as much as a picker with the name of the currently chosen font would, making it appear more obvious on the preference page.

Thanks Much

Steven Leary
