Airpods for the partial hearing

I am totally deaf in my right ear, but I have full hearing in my left ear. I have only used earphones in the past.

Can a left hand airpod be used without the right one being in place? Are any of the functions going to be limited as a result? Which generation of airpods will/will not work, given my disability?

I've seen other partial hearing people ask about swapping an unused left/right airpod so that they have two useful airpods, so I presume they must function with just one ear working (to some degree).

Thanks!

Hi ChrisKerschH,

It is the case that you can use just one AirPod without the other being in your ear and still have the same features. There are different stetting options for AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. Check out Customize headphone audio levels on your iPhone or iPad. The overall settings can be found here:

  1. When AirPods are in your ear, tap Settings > Bluetooth > AirPods > blue more info "i" button: Adjust the accessibility settings for AirPods on iPhone.
  2. Settings > Accessibility > AirPods: Adjust the accessibility settings for AirPods on iPhone.
  3. Settings  > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > Headphone Accommodations: Adjust headphone audio settings on iPhone.

Take care.
