Why did my iPhone 14 screen go black?

My new iPhone 14pro max has a black screen this morning following its regular overnight charge. I have tried the reset and it is now plugged in via a cord hoping this will work. Anyone else had this issue?

FYI, 16.0.2 did NOT fix the problem on my 14 Pro as hoped. I put it back on my wireless charger last night for the first time since my overnight BSOD a week ago. When I woke up this morning, it was clear the phone had rebooted (passcode required; different home screen widgets showing). I opened the battery app and found it had been unresponsive for 3 hours overnight, then re-booted itself. My first BSOD occurrence while charging overnight was similar but never rebooted. This is really annoying...

Black Screen of Death

BTW, there's a 300+ post on Reddit discussing the issue. It seems to be highly correlated with charging, especially overnight charging, both wired and wireless. There are a couple of cases where this happened while not charging, but those seem rare. I'm surprised it hasn't appeared in the press yet. The Click Vol Up, Click Vol Down, Hold Sleep button until logo appears (up to a minute or two!) fix seems to revive the phone in all cases I've seen...

I had the problem and none of the regular solutions actually fixed the issue for me, they just made it a bit better for a short time. The two things that actually fixed it for me were

  • Back up the device (to the cloud or local computer or whatever), reset the device and set up from scratch again, during the setup process restore your data from the backup

  • Changing the Home/Lock Screen to standard images

I'm not sure which of these things actually fixed it for me but one (or both combined) definitely has, my phone has been working without any issues for 2 months (I charge it overnight and don't force close any apps)

I haven't tried changing the Home/Lock Screen images back to a custom image yet, I'm happy with the new 'Earth Detail, Astronomy' screen I have, I'll probably try it one day to check though.

UPDATE

Hey guys,

I’ve brought in my phone with the same issues. A brand new phone which had the black screen of death when I FIRST set it up.

@Apple didn’t do **** all. When I sent my phone away to get it fixed with them, I received it back and same thing happened AGAIN immediately.

i didn’t buy my phone from the Apple Store, so I sent it back to my phone provider and they again, sent it away to fix. Fortunately, this time receiving it back from them my phone hasn’t had the issue at all and it’s been 2 months.

You have to trust me with this one, all you do is that you try pressing the volume up button once then the volume down button once then keep pressing the power button for 30 seconds or longer and if that doesn’t work then plug your phone to the charger and leave it for 10 minutes or even 15 minutes and it’ll turn on by itself

Just like I posted 8 days ago!

And none of these fixes work for me and yes, it did happen after I had my phone on charge for a while I had this happen two months ago, and the button resets worked, but this time nothing is working even asking Siri to turn up the brightness what she said she did but of course it's still a black screen I've held the side button for as long as two minutes nothing happens

While it is called an iPhone, it is actually a very powerful pocket-sized computer that can incidentally make phone calls. And like all computers, it will crash occasionally, and that’s what happened. To minimize the probability of that happening it may pay to restart it occasionally (weekly, for example)→Restart your iPhone - Apple Support
