imessage chat split into two on my laptop but not on my iphone

Hi, recently my imessages on my laptop has split up a conversation I've been having with one person (not a group chat) into two separate conversations. I only have one contact set up for this person with both their phone number and their imessage email in it, and have changed nothing in the year-long period we have been talking.

The imessage chat split yesterday but has divided all the messages we have sent for the last month(ish) and it's honestly really annoying me.

is there a way to merge them back together?

Hello inekee,

There isn’t a way to merge a conversation that has been split.

Since it sounds like an older message thread has split, ensure macOS is updated to help troubleshoot the behavior, and reach out to Apple Support directly for assistance:

Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

  1. "Before continuing, it's a good idea to back up your Mac.
  2. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Preferences.
  3. Click Software Update in the System Preferences window. Can't find Software Update?
  4. Software Update now checks for new software.
    • If Software Update finds new software, click Update Now or Upgrade Now to install. You might be asked to restart or enter an administrator password.
    • If Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, then no new software is currently available for your Mac model."

You can reach out to Apple Support using the following link: Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support

Kind regards.
